What Exactly is Change Management?

Understanding this fundamental leadership principal beyond its existence as a consulting buzzword can help you weather even the most uncertain times.

Leadership Concepts with Arrows on Blackboad Background

Jargon is pervasive in our lexicon, especially in business. The growth of the consulting realm in the space has led to the expansive use of terms such as 鈥渂oil the ocean,鈥 鈥淕reenfield,鈥 鈥渨hite space,鈥 and 鈥渃hange management.鈥 While some can be different ways to state more basic concepts, some of these ideas contain some depth鈥攃hange management falls into this category.

So, what exactly does change management mean? According to Harvard Business School, Change management is the process of guiding organizational change to fruition, from the earliest stages of conception and preparation through implementation and, finally, resolution.

Considering the evolving nature of our industry and the need for 麻豆入口 chapters to support their member contractors in these uncertain periods, it is absolutely crucial to be able to pivot and change how your organization operates.

The Society for Human Resource Management outlines the case for building an intense change management process and how it can make the seemingly overwhelming prospect of realigning core operations and procedures more bearable.

However, implementing change can be difficult in any setting. Breaking old habits and routines can be difficult, but flexibility is key. Forbes magazine has some basic suggestions on how you can make your organization more mobile and ready for change:

  • Have Employees Engaged in the Process
  • Make It Seem Evolutionary Instead of Revolutionary
  • Maintain Flexibility and Willingness to Adjust in case something goes south!

Change management, much like any process that touches on people and their engagement with an organization/business, depends on finding the appropriate balance between the needs of the organization and those of the people associated with it. This is nothing new in the business or association world. You must be prepared to pivot where necessary, but these processes cannot be leveraged as a blunt instrument. They need to be leveraged carefully and surgically to be in a space where you can meet the goals of your members and the industry as a whole.
